The Night of the Iguana by Tennessee Williams is a story about the struggles of the mind and seeking sanctuary from those struggles. Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon comes to the Costa Verde Hotel to hide from the consequences of his narcissism and sexual misconduct with young girls. Elderly poet Jonathan Coffin (Nonno) seeks a quiet place to finish his last poem before he succumbs to the ravages of dementia, and his faithful traveling companion and granddaughter Hannah Jelkes waits helplessly for the end of their journey. Our design concept used saturated colors, impressionist paint treatments and heavy texturing to represent that decay of the mind. My lighting design incorporated strong amber tones in the first act to impart a look reminiscent of old sepia photographs and a heavy haze that emphasized the oppressive atmosphere of the Mexican jungle as well as the haziness of mental illness. In the second act, the haze has cleared, the moonlight is clear and bright, and both Shannon and Nonno find clarity in their rainforest sanctuary.
